Industrial Lighting

An Automated System for Energy Savings

Task

Due to the large floor areas of industrial facilities and the need to comply with workplace safety regulations, production sites must maintain lighting with high luminous intensity and brightness. This is often achieved through a large number of light fixtures, resulting in high electrical load and excessive energy consumption. Consequently, manufacturers face an important question — how to reduce operational costs through energy-saving measures.

In addition, the lighting of industrial facilities comes with its own specific challenges. For example, access to the electrical control panel must be restricted to authorized personnel, which requires the constant physical presence of an employee responsible for switching lights on and off. This, in turn, leads to additional administrative costs and inefficient organization of workflows.

Solution

A LoRaWAN-based wireless system that connects to dimmable industrial lights offers an effective solution. This Industrial LoRa system enables lighting parameter monitoring and remote control functionality.

A LoRa base station is installed on the premises to receive information from the luminaires and send commands for activation depending on:

  • time of day,

  • natural light levels from windows, or

  • motion sensor input.

Data from LoRa radio modules integrated into lights and control panels is consolidated into a central monitoring dashboard for production facilities. As a result, when a warehouse is closed, the system automatically turns off industrial lighting or switches it to maximum energy-saving mode, reducing power consumption by 50–65%.

Result

Additionally, LoRaWAN technology allows for system expansion to include power supply monitoring. This enables 100% visibility into the operational status of all lighting equipment and its power availability. Reed sensors connected through IoT modems can report door open/close states, enhancing the facility’s security system. Meanwhile, the flexible power management system can automate voltage control and power supply for equipment of any type.
